Here Are 8 Tips To Boost Your Productivity as a Writer

If that wasn’t enough, there are umpteen distractions like social media that distract a writer. The days and months pass by without realizing that there has been minimal progress on the writing project. There is a constant fight with the distractions and priorities to get into writing. If you have been facing the same, here are a few tips that can help boost your productivity.
1. Plan your schedule:
A writer’s life can be chaotic with several other responsibilities at hand. The chances are that writing might take a back seat while juggling between the priorities. Hence, you should set a particular schedule for writing and manage all the other responsibilities accordingly.
When it comes to planning your schedule, many people suggest the number of hours of writing per day, and they also advise on including regular breaks into the schedule. While this can be true, it varies from individual to individual. Some people might need a break regularly, while some don’t. Hence, it is up to you to figure out what works best for you. There is no hard and fast rule on the kind of schedule you should have. If you are already aware of one that works best for you, that’s great. Else, you can try out the different schedules and choose the one you are most comfortable with.
2. Set your Goals:

This is apt for anyone who wants the book to be pending till eternity. With no goals at hand, you will lack the motivation to work hard and walk the extra mile to accomplish what you are set out for.
3. Create an Outline:
A preset outline gives you clarity on what needs to be written. It is easy to have our minds wavering in different directions as soon as we start writing. An outline will give the much-needed direction to the thoughts. It is suggested that you prepare the outline of the article in advance, probably a day prior or at least before a couple of hours. The advantage you ask? It would run in your subconscious & get the content ready; by the time you are on the table, you will note that the content flows automatically.
4. Create a conducive environment:
A writer should be in an environment that is calm, rejuvenating, and facilitates the flow of thoughts; away from the noisy places like (probably) home. The chances are that there would be numerous interruptions and disturbances that might break the flow of thoughts. But the pandemic Covid-19 has restricted us to our homes.
Hence, the best you could do to create a conducive environment for you to write is to block off the background noises, and create a voice simulation of the kind of place you would like to be in, be it a café or in the woods. Platforms like Noisli can help you create the background of your choice through background sounds. It would help you focus better and improve your productivity.
5. Read..Read…Read:

Not just books, consume any kind of content from movies, documentaries, videos, etc. that are related to the subject of your book. Reading books and consuming additional content would help you with ideas for your book and overcome writer’s block. Additionally, you can also attend workshops on writing to improve your skill.
6. Block out the distractions:
Well, distractions are a part of a writer’s life. Checking the Facebook or Twitter feeds that was supposed to last for 5-10 minutes, stretches on to an hour or even more, consuming the precious time from writing. Additionally, constant notifications from various social media platforms can disturb the flow of your thoughts. What’s the solution?
- Use blocking platforms like Cold Turkey or Freedom that help Eliminate distractions. These platforms block social media and other distracting platforms from your system.
- Buy a writing-specific device: That’s true! Several authors prefer to buy a separate device like a laptop that is not connected to the internet and is only used for writing.
7. Get involved with the Writing community:
To grow in your creative journey, a support group is a must. Connect with other like-minded authors offline or through social networking platforms. Participate in the discussions on writing, seek opinions on any problem that you might be facing, get feedback on your writing, get suggestions on the improvements; you can do much more with your peer group of writers and authors.
8. Beat Procrastination:
Easy said than done! But to excel in your writing career, you will have to beat procrastination. It is easy to fall into trap of “I’ll do it when I feel prepared or when I’m ready”. That exactly is procrastination. You feel that you aren’t prepared for what you want to write, you need some more time for preparation, or there might be other priorities that the writing goes under the radar. Whenever you feel this, remember what Pablo Picasso said: “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone”.
What are the ways you can beat procrastination?
- First and foremost, get excited about your writing. Excitement can help you beat the “I’ll do it later syndrome”. We are excited about the work, and hence all our energies get channelized in completing the work.
- Develop a starting ritual: This could help as well. Our minds are highly trainable, and hence developing a ritual like starting your writing immediately after your coffee, immediately after waking up, or immediately after any other activity would help train your mind to get into writing at that point in time. The time could be preferably morning when the mind is fresh and creative juices are flowing, but you could make this a practice for any part of the day you feel comfortable with.
Conclusion:
We hope that these tips help you become more productive and the world gets to see your masterpiece book sooner than expected. We wish you the best in your writing endeavor.
