Most Bluetooth keyboards work everywhere on iOS because they simply replace the onscreen keyboard. LinkedIn’s mobile app, however, treats its comment field differently from ordinary text inputs, and that design breaks the standard Bluetooth-keyboard flow.

What is happening in the LinkedIn app

1. Custom, JavaScript-driven editor

LinkedIn embeds a rich-text component (the same one used on desktop) inside the iOS app. It intercepts key events in JavaScript to add @mentions, hashtags, link previews, etc. When iOS detects a hardware keyboard, it passes keystrokes directly to the web view instead of showing the native keyboard. Some Bluetooth models send minimal HID codes; those codes never reach the JavaScript layer, so nothing appears in the comment box[1].

2. No software-keyboard fallback for hardware keyboards

Apple hides the onscreen keyboard whenever any external keyboard is connected. Most apps add an “show keyboard” caret icon above the prediction bar; LinkedIn’s comment editor does not. If the rich-text component fails to recognize your external keyboard, you have no fallback way to type.

3. LinkedIn blocks some “Control” sequences

Several compact Bluetooth keyboards (e.g., Logitech Keys-To-Go, Apple Magic Keyboard) rely on Control-key combinations to send Return/Enter or Emoji.

LinkedIn’s comment editor traps Control events to trigger its own shortcuts (?+Enter to post, ?+K to add a link). The result: letters may work, but Enter never registers, making it look as if nothing types at all[2].

Why it works in every other app

Notes, Mail, Safari, WhatsApp, and most native iOS text fields rely on the standard UIKit `UITextInput` class. That class accepts the basic HID scan codes all certified Bluetooth keyboards send—no JavaScript layer in between—so typing is trouble-free.

Work-arounds

Use LinkedIn in Safari – Type linkedin.com, open the same post, and the Bluetooth keyboard will work because Safari’s address bar/editor is the standard web text box.

Temporarily detach the keyboard – Turn Bluetooth off/on in Control Center. iOS will show its onscreen keyboard and you can paste text entered elsewhere.

Tap the hidden “keyboard” icon – On iOS 16+, when a hardware keyboard is attached, a tiny down-chevron appears at bottom-right of the screen; long-press it and choose “Show Keyboard” to force the software keyboard, then paste your text.

Third-party keyboard helper apps – Utilities such as KeyCommand or Type2Phone can relay keystrokes as if they are coming from the onscreen keyboard; LinkedIn then accepts the input.

Lobby LinkedIn – The real fix is for LinkedIn’s iOS team to promote their text editor to handle external-keyboard events the same way Gmail, Twitter/X, and Facebook already do. (If you do this, let us know :) happy to feature your efforts :))

Bottom line

Nothing is wrong with your Bluetooth keyboard or iPhone; it’s LinkedIn’s comment editor. It captures keyboard events in a custom web view and fails to process the simplified HID reports many portable keyboards send, so keystrokes disappear. Until LinkedIn updates its iOS app, use Safari or disconnect the keyboard whenever you need to leave a comment.
