7 Fun Summer Holiday Activities for Outdoor Play
The summer holidays are a perfect time for kids to get outside and enjoy the warmer weather (if we’re lucky enough to have any!) through active outdoor play. Getting some fresh air and exercise provides a range of physical and mental health benefits. Here are 7 fun outdoor activities to keep your kids engaged and entertained during the long break from school.
Explore Nature
Go on woodland walks, nature trails, or scavenger hunts. Challenge the kids to spot different birds, insects, plants, and trees. Bring a nature guidebook and see how many they can identify. Have them collect interesting leaves, seeds, feathers, or pebbles and create a nature collage or artwork when you get home. Being outdoors and immersed in nature is great for creativity and well-being.
Back Garden Camping
Pitch a tent or build a den in the garden and pretend you’re camping in the wild. Cook dinner on a disposable barbecue or small camping stove, tell stories around a torch, and sleep in sleeping bags under the stars. This is an inexpensive way to create a fun outdoor adventure for kids. Make it extra exciting by planning a back garden treasure hunt or outdoor movie night.
Water Play
On hot summer days, set up a paddling pool, water slide, sprinkler, or water toys like water guns for endless water fun. Play games like filling up buckets and cups to pour down toy water wheels or see who can squirt a target with a water pistol. Add in some pool noodle lightsabers for pool duels or master bubble wands for bubble clouds. Endless water play is a classic way to cool down.
Sports and Games
Get active by playing classic outdoor games like tag, hide and seek, frisbee, hopscotch, or badminton in the garden. Or try volleyball with a net, spike ball, croquet, or skittles. Having sports equipment and game ideas on hand makes it easy to get kids moving and burn off energy in a healthy way during the holidays. If you’re fostering, you can use some of your fostering allowance to help cover the cost of fun activities like this. Learn more about fostering if this interests you.
Family Bike Rides
Explore your local area and cycle to parks, woodlands or riverside paths. Pack a picnic and make it an adventure. Bring scooters, roller skates, BMX bikes or go-karts to suit different ages and abilities. Cycling is a great family activity and you can incorporate fun stops for ice cream, playgrounds or to feed ducks along the way.
Family Yoga
Find a nice outdoor spot and have fun trying beginner yoga poses like tree, downward dog, bridge, and warrior. Play yoga storytelling games where you act out different moves. Or just unroll some mats in the garden for a guided mindfulness and relaxation session. Getting some active yoga time together is beneficial for both kids' and parents' fitness and mental health.
Back Garden Obstacle Course
Set up a simple obstacle course using things you have around like hula hoops, buckets, pool noodles, water tables, ropes, slides, etc. Then time each other racing around the course for a fun family fitness challenge. Get creative by adding balance beams, crawling tunnels, target practice - anything to make an exciting obstacle run.
