Playing Sports Regularly Makes a Big Difference to Your Health
Childhood is a great reminder of being active and playful for almost all of us — or at least most of us. Many of us use adulthood as an excuse to move away from that phase of life. I think differently.
I believe one can remain playful throughout life as long as sports and outdoor games (and physically engaging indoor games too) are seen as a means of exercise and staying fit.
Think of cricket, basketball, badminton, table tennis, swimming, cycling and everything else you played during childhood that involved great physical activity. Those moments kept you fit, happy, and full of life.
As you grew older, however, you gradually lost touch with most of these sports and now feel somewhat alien to them.
Many times, you may not find the right partners to play these games with. At other times, you may feel too busy to invest time in them because doing so might come at the cost of your growth potential.
A lot of people who understand the secret behind the benefits of sports still engage in them regularly. Others, meanwhile, receive advice from well-wishers suggesting they join a sports club, a gym, yoga sessions, or Zumba classes.
Today, even getting a quick run feels like an achievement. What once wasn’t even the most remarkable part of the day has become something we measure and celebrate as adults. Perhaps we got it wrong somewhere along the way.
Going for a run, playing badminton, tennis, or cricket every single day for 30 minutes should not be treated as a big deal.
Yet we often hear people talk about engaging in these activities with phrases like “at least once a week,” “once a month,” “once in a fortnight,” “twice a month,” or “twice a week.”
Seriously? While continuing to eat three meals a day?
Are you sure that’s the best way to grow up? Three meals a day throughout childhood while staying highly active — and then three meals a day continuing into adulthood while physically engaging activities are reduced to once a month? Whoa!!!
Can you feel something inside you right now? Take a minute and listen to what your heart might be saying at this moment.
“I need to start playing sports again.”
“True! Let me get involved in sports or physical activity again.”
And then, the very next second:
“Do I have enough energy?”
“Do I have enough time?”
“Who will I play with?”
“Will I fall out of it again?”
These doubts have stopped you for years and prevented you from doing something you can easily commit to — just like having your three meals every day.
One activity every single day that takes just 30 minutes of your time — with absolutely no compromise. Some require some don't. Swimming, Running, Cycling or a LONG WALK are all something you could pursue all by yourself while cricket and other sports like badminton or table tennis might need other players. Needing other players must not deter you from your goal. There are several ways to find them. I find these helpful:
1. Join communities online — almost every sport has one.
2. Find a sports center near your home and connect with people already playing there.
3. Find colleagues, friends, or cousins who are interested in the same sports.
4. Ask for interested people in your apartment or housing society through WhatsApp or Facebook groups.
No matter what, commit to joining at least one group and give yourself the head start you need to honor this commitment.
Remember, you could be winning trophies again in your life and surprising yourself with hidden talents you may have forgotten about. Or at the very least, give yourself the chance to live that dream at an apartment, society, or office level.
And even if trophies are not part of your dream set, know this: a fitter version of you is waiting on the other side of this commitment — in less than a year.
That fitter version of you will have more energy and more time for almost everything. Perhaps you will add another sport to your list, or maybe you will return to a hobby you gave up long ago.
The choice is entirely yours.
Let’s expand our days and make them more elastic in the future to unfold. Let’s commit to 30 minutes of physically engaging activity or sport every single day.
