Lovlina Borgohain was born on October 2nd, 1997 in the Golaghat district of Assam state of India. She is a third child to Tiken Borgohain (her father) and Mamoni Borgohain (her mother). She saw her share of struggles growing up as her father was a small-scale businessman surviving the family with a small amount of income that he used to earn.
Her parents were very supportive of sports and did their best in their capacity to support the children for sports. Lovlina’s elder sisters Licha and Lima (who were twins) competed at the national level in Kickboxing. But they couldn’t continue further due to the financial problems at home. Lovlina had picked up kickboxing initially until a life-changing moment of her life.
She was pursuing her education from Barpathar Girls High School, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) held Boxing trials in the school. Given her interest in sports, Lovlina participated in the trials. Based on her performance, she was selected by Mr. Padam Chandra Bodo, a renowned coach in the region. She was selected to receive basic training in boxing. She picked up the sport really well and learnt things faster.
Professional Career:
After her initial basic training with Mr. Padam Chandra Bodo, she started getting trained by Ms. Sandhya Gurung, a boxing inspiration who fought paralysis in her life before becoming a legend in boxing. One of the pivotal aspects of Lovlina’s successful boxing career is the coaching of Ms. Sandhya Gurung. She focused on Lovlina and helped her overcome the flaws and turned her into the champion we know today.
In 2017, she started participating in international tournaments and clinched a Bronze medal in Asian Boxing Championships held in Vietnam, and another Bronze in President’s Cup held in Astana.
The year 2018 was the biggest year for Lovlina. She won a bronze medal in the 2018 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships, a Silver at Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia, and a Gold medal at the inaugural India Open. She even got selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Welterweight Boxing category. Though she couldn’t win a medal, she had etched her name in the field of women’s boxing by reaching the quarterfinals and finishing in 4th place in her Commonwealth Games debut.
The winning streak continued in 2019 as well. She again won a Bronze medal at AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships held that year. Then came the point she had been waiting for throughout her career- the qualifications for Tokyo Olympics 2020. The tournament was called the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. She sealed her place in Olympics in the 69-kgs category in this tournament.

By qualifying for Olympics, Lovlina became the first-ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for Tokyo Olympics 2020. At her Olympics debut, Lovlina stood up to the expectations of the entire country- she bagged a Bronze medal for India. She had reached the semi-finals of the Olympics in which she faced a defeat from Russia’s Busenaz Surmeneli who eventually went on to win the Gold in Welterweight category.
