The Birth of a Homegrown Powerhouse: What the Bharat 4680 Cell Means

At the core of this milestone is the 4680 Bharat Cell—an advanced lithium-ion battery cell designed and manufactured by Ola Electric within India’s borders. Unlike traditional models that depend on imported cell technology, the 4680 Bharat Cell represents an end-to-end vertical integration of cutting-edge battery manufacturing, from cell design to pack assembly. Certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under AIS-156 Amendment 4 standards, the battery pack’s rigorous performance and safety credentials underscore India’s ability to compete on the global stage of high-technology manufacturing—a leap that was once thought years away. 

This homegrown cell powers Ola’s latest electric scooters, beginning with the S1 Pro+ model outfitted with a 5.2 kWh battery pack. This combination delivers up to a 320 km range on the Indian Driving Cycle (IDC) and remarkable acceleration—0 to 40 km/hr in just 2.1 seconds—putting performance, sustainability, and national pride on two wheels.
