Overcoming Procrastination as an Entrepreneur
Procrastination is a common struggle among entrepreneurs, and it can have serious consequences for their businesses. According to a study by the University of Scranton, only 8% of people actually achieve their New Year's resolutions. The main reason for this is procrastination. When it comes to entrepreneurship, procrastination can lead to missed opportunities, decreased productivity, and ultimately, failure.
In fact, 20% of new businesses fail in their first year, and 50% fail within five years. But don't worry, there are ways to overcome procrastination and become a successful entrepreneur. At IU we used to conduct training programs a decade ago, where we helped several people start their own companies and put their ideas into action with workshops that spoke about getting your idea into action in less than 24hours and giving it the apt shape within weeks. One of those ideas was this platform that serves 30Mn+ Search Engine Impressions today. It was kick started as a subscription box on our training website with the first vision and thought that just came about.
In this article, we'll explore some tips and techniques to help you overcome procrastination and achieve your business goals.
1. Set Clear Goals:
One of the reasons people procrastinate is because they don't have clear goals. As an entrepreneur, it's important to set specific, measurable, and achievable goals. This will help you focus on what you need to accomplish and stay motivated.
Eg., Our [iU’s] mission is to publish 1 Million Inspiring Stories and inspire over 100 million+ people digitally in the next 10 years! This keeps us going. "How far we reach depends totally on how far we set out to reach" is what our founder totally believes in. A million stories sounds too big right? But getting to 100,000+ would look a lot easier then and even keep you grounded making you feel like an under achiever. When in reality that would be a BIG DEAL anyways. #StayInspiredOnTheGo
2. Prioritize Tasks:
As an entrepreneur, you likely have many tasks on your to-do list. It's important to prioritize them based on their importance and urgency. This will help you focus on the most important tasks and avoid procrastinating on them.
With changing times we had to evolve as well at IU. We focused on bringing in interviews and stories at the onset, then later as the inspiring information became a thing, we focused our energies there. We saw that the importance of summits and conferences was something we totally believed in, and then in the next phase that became our priority [getting us to partner with 400+ world's largest summits from over 40+ Nations as their online media partners].
Few notable of those summits can be found via : https://www.iuemag.com/events-feed.php ] Today with AI coming into existence we have slowly started fathoming into longer articles, video content, statistics driven thought leadership writing and we believe our readers have loved our content at each stage as 1Mn+ SE Impressions is something our content did yet again last month as of July 2025.
3. Break Tasks into Smaller Steps:
Large tasks can be overwhelming, which can lead to procrastination. To avoid this, break large tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. This will help you focus on one step at a time and make progress towards your goals.
We always believe that no great thing was ever accomplished without focusing on the smaller details, and you can only focus on details if you break larger tasks into smaller ones. At IU we take each article as a set of multiple smaller headings. If content in each sub-head is making an impact, the piece is bound to make a difference and get added into the bookmarks/future reads. Let's accept it, if we like a piece, we like it because of the glance or first few points and we tend to keep it for future reads. A lot of our readers do delayed reading but they do come back. That inspires us to do more of what we do.
4. Use a Timer:
Using a timer can be an effective way to overcome procrastination. Set a timer for a specific amount of time and focus on a task for that period. This will help you avoid distractions and stay focused on the task at hand.
For Entrepreneurs, in particular, keeping a timer is so important because no task feels less important and going deeper or wider in any aspect only feels rewarding. Overall picture [larger picture] gets ruined when you go too deep in one aspect without giving time to others. Holistic nutrition of your business is possible when you feed every aspect with right amount of attention every single day/week/month. Comes with practice. Start small. Start with your first 30 minutes timer. Sounds long. 5 Minutes would do as well.
5. Eliminate Distractions:
Distractions are one of the main causes of procrastination. To overcome procrastination, eliminate distractions as much as possible. This might mean turning off your phone or email notifications while you work.Several modes are available now-a-days on phones: work mode, focus mode and what not. Use them. Use the settings. Download the right apps that help you do that or even pay for a subscription of such apps [when you spend you get committed. Right?], because eliminating distractions is a BIG WIN. [Turn off those notifications you have been getting while reading this :)]
6. Find an Accountability Partner:
Accountability can be a powerful motivator. Find someone who can hold you accountable for your goals and progress. This could be a business partner, mentor, or friend.
You always are going to need one. Now or later. You need one. Try multiple accountability partners for multiple fronts: exercise, work, reading, walking, napping and so on. You will do well on all fronts and eventually have great relationships and freindships because of the progress you would make together.
If you are lucky to have a spouse that works well as your accountability : no harm done. In fact, you have hit open a jackpot. Some of you might find your kids to be those and others parents. Be it. But, find one and get accountable. Not only will you get held accountable, you will also soon learn delegation and holding others accountable where needed. Needed right?
7. Practice Self-Care:
Taking care of yourself is essential for overcoming procrastination. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, exercise, and healthy food. This will help you feel energized and motivated to work on your business.
Entrepreneurs who think burning themselves to exhaustion is legendary, soon learn prioritizing self care with hospital bills or broken relationships. So, accept this as a truth from the holy book you believe in and make time for self care. Health: Physical and Mental need focus and attention. Being healthy feels rewarding too.
8. Celebrate Small Wins:
Celebrating small wins can be a great way to stay motivated and overcome procrastination. When you accomplish a small task or make progress towards a goal, take a moment to celebrate your success.
Delaying gratification is great but cancelling on celebrations is not a great way at all. Celebrations don't always need a big budget. If you need we could give you several budget friendly ideas: Chat with our WhatsApp InspiHero from the icon at the bottom of the article and let's get this right for you. Make a list of what celebration means to you, and get celebrating on every win.
9. Create a Productive Environment:
Your environment can have a big impact on your productivity. Make sure your workspace is clean, organized, and free of distractions. This will help you stay focused on your work and avoid procrastination.
Environment is everything. From the one at work, to one at home and one for the planet, each environment needs your attention and making it wonderful only works wonders for you in return. Why do you see so much talk around "Circles", "Surrounding", "Friends" etc. because it really does matter that much. So set yourself a productive environment.
At least, start with getting your workspace done right. There are ton of things/quality inspiring products you could buy for your workplace, softwares you could subscribe to and tools you could buy, that enhance your productivity. Do that today.
10. Practice Mindfulness:
Mindfulness is the practice of being present and focused in the moment. It can be a powerful tool for overcoming procrastination. Take a few moments each day to practice mindfulness, whether it's through meditation or simply taking deep breaths.
"Where did time fly?" Is it 2025 already, I thought I was still in 2022 or something. Don't get to this state of mind or set of feelings again, in future. Stay mindful and you won't. Daily reflection as mentioned above will help you get here.
11. Use Positive Self-Talk:
The way you talk to yourself can have a big impact on your motivation. Use positive self-talk to encourage yourself and stay motivated. Instead of saying "I'll never get this done," say "I can do this, one step at a time."
Since you are going to talk to yourself, might as well do the positive talk. We understand having that negative angle, helps you develop the ability to prevent disasters, don't end up blocking your basic wins, because the thoughts are super preventive in nature. Positive self talk helps.
12. Set Deadlines:
Deadlines can be a powerful motivator for overcoming procrastination. Set realistic deadlines for your tasks and hold yourself accountable for meeting them. This will help you stay focused and avoid putting things off.
Taking forever for a project isn't called working on that project. It is instead called day dreaming and fantasizing. Nothing wrong in that either. Just that, you feel exhausted thinking that you have worked on something for several years, when actually you haven't done anything more than just fanstasizing. Like the Life Simplified - V2.0 in my case is a thing that has already been on my mind for more than a decade and now I realize it has not been my project at all. It's my desire, wish or fantasy but not project yet. Wanna challenge me and hold me accountable to it. Hit me a tweet: @sujitlalwani. Let's get this going too.
13. Embrace Imperfection:
Perfectionism can be a major cause of procrastination. Remember that it's okay to make mistakes and that perfection isn't always necessary. Embrace imperfection and focus on making progress towards your goals.
My book on imperfection is up and LIVE [marketing it just when I got the opportunity :)]. But, genuinely it's my first production with AI. You will love it for a quick kindle read or weekend. It teaches you to embrace every aspect of your imperection because what on earth is perfect? What in this universe is? [Universe itself is - of course. But at the atomic scale/ nano scale. Everything is random. Chaotic. Unpredictable]. Randomness makes everything beautiful. So does consistency. Build on each in different areas and embrace the overall imperfect result called life. The act of embracing it, perfects it.
Conclusion:
Procrastination can be a major hurdle for entrepreneurs, but it's important to remember that it's a common struggle. By implementing the strategies outlined here, entrepreneurs can overcome procrastination and achieve their business goals.
It's important to stay motivated, hold yourself accountable, and celebrate small wins along the way. With these tips and techniques, you can become a more productive and successful entrepreneur.
