It has caught popularity especially among the younger generation in Vietnam. My Teksi was launched in Malaysia and later rebranded to ‘GrabTaxi and then to ‘Grab’ in 2016. Grab continued to grow across South-East Asia with its ride-hailing service, entering Vietnam in 2014. Today, it is present in Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan. In 2018, Uber’s South-East Operations, including Uber Eats, merged with Grab, enabling Grab to enter the food delivery segment. It resulted in the launch of Grab Food in 2018.

In Vietnam, GrabFood has established a stronger foothold in the Food delivery segment in the country. According to a survey by Rakuten Insights, 66% of the respondents mentioned that GrabFood was the app they used the most for food ordering requirements. Grab isn’t looking to slow down and would continue to increase its market share in all of the countries they are present in.

NOW.vn:

NOW.vn is the food delivery app launched in May 2016 by Foody.vn, a renowned startup from Vietnam. It was launched as ‘Delivery Now’ before being rebranded to ‘NOW.vn’.

Foody.vn was founded in 2012 by Mr. Minh Dang as the restaurant discovery and reviews platform. It has grown to have more than 120,000 restaurants and more than 1 million registered users on its platform.

Since its launch in 2016, NOW.vn has established itself as one of the strongest players in the market, becoming the second most-preferred app for food delivery, according to the Rakuten Insights’ Survey. Singapore-based Sea Limited, a consumer internet company, has acquired an 82% stake in the company and the management of operations of Foody.vn and NOW.vn. GoFood:

GoFood is the Food Delivery segment of Indonesia’s first ‘Unicorn’ and a ‘Decacorn’- ‘Gojek’. Founded in 2009 by Mr. Nadiem Makarim and Mr. Michaelangelo Moran as a call center service to connect customers to motorcycle taxis called ojeks, today Gojeck has become a super app providing more than 20 services through its app.

Gojek’s first app was launched in 2015 with four services ‘GoRide, GoSend, GoShop, and GoFood’. In the span of the last five years since the launch of the app, GoFood has more than 80,000 Food merchants on their platform. According to the survey by eCommerceIQ, Gojek is the most popular ride-hailing and most-used app in Indonesia.

In Vietnam, however, Gojek began its operations in 2018 with a brand name ‘GoViet’ and rebranded to Gojek in 2020.

BAEMIN:

BAEMIN is a South-Korean app owned by Wowwa Brothers founded by Mr. Kim Bong-Jin in 2010. Wowwa Brothers own Baedal Minjok, a delivery platform, and BAEMIN, its subsidiary, and a Food Delivery platform.

In May 2019, BAEMIN (owned by Wowwa Brothers) acquired Vietnammm, the largest food delivery platform of Vietnam previously acquired and owned by Takeaway.com based out of the Netherlands.

Wowwa Brothers and the holding companies have been acquired by the Berlin-based Delivery Hero in December 2019 for a sum of US$4 billion from Mr. Kim Bong-Jin.

In January 2021, BAEMIN has shut down Vietnammm to establish a single entity in the Vietnam market. BAEMIN would race for market share against the players like GrabFood, GoFood, and NOW.vn. Loship is the on-demand one-hour delivery platform operating in Vietnam. It is the product vertical of Lozi, a home-grown restaurant discovery and review platform founded by Mr. Trung Nguyen in 2014.

Loship was launched in 2017 and was in the news across the country after having MetaPlanet, a VC firm of Mr. Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype). It started as a food delivery platform but has soon expanded to other services that include groceries, ride-hailing, laundry services pickup, medicines, and flowers among others.
Loship has gained popularity across the country, and it is on the path to becoming a unicorn. With the strong leadership of Mr. Trung, Loship has on-boarded more than 50,000 drivers and 190,000 merchants on its platform. It has also garnered more than 1,500,000 users on the platform [Source].
