Emotional Wellness & its effect on Decision-making

Emotionally well people are able to express feelings freely and manage feelings effectively in a constructive way. Emotional wellness is having a positive attitude, high self-esteem, a strong sense of self and maintain satisfying relationships, deal with conflict and remain grounded during stressful times

Emotional wellness is not an end-stage but a continual process of change and growth.

Emotion: The word “emotion” means movement. Emotion means energy-in-motion. Emotions are natural. It is a way of expressing oneself in life. My 5-year-old niece would look at my mom, her granny and always ask, “Why are you sad granny?” My mom’s answer always would always be “I am not sad.” She would insist, “No granny, you are in oceanic desolation, your face is so sad.” My mom says, “My face is only like that.” My niece would observe every person’s face and would comment on whether they are happy or sad. I wondered how she could figure out so accurately as I had also been the target of her happy or sad face questioning.
Inevitably, I always assured her that I am not feeling sad though I knew in my heart of hearts that I was feeling sad. Why is it I did not want to show my sadness? Why was I, not in ease in accepting that I was sad? Sometimes, when she would say, “Stop smiling, I know you are happy.” I would smile more to show off my happiness from inside. Was I not authentic with my feelings? What made me comfortable showing my happy state of mind? What is the message that I was giving out through my expressions? Do I really know my feelings?

They are happy, sad, angry, full of fear, disgust, excited (trustworthy), anticipation(sarcasm) and surprise. These are the feelings that each one of us have encountered more than once.

Face is the index of the mind. Very aptly said! Notice the eyebrows, eyes, lips, teeth display and nose size -so many changes with each feeling. It does not remain the same. Each expression depicts a feeling. Why did the facial expressions change? Who triggered the change? From where did the energy arise? For how long is this energy available? Where is the source of this feeling?

Emotions are our inner feelings. Emotions are what happens in the brain. Emotions are at a deeper level than the body and thoughts. Emotions are important because most of the activities in life originate from our emotions and not from our thoughts. Most of what we do is influenced by our love, anger, hatred; in short, our emotions and not by our thoughts.

Emotions in decision-making

The left hemisphere of the brain is reasoning or logical brain. The right hemisphere of the brain is an emotional brain. Our decisions are taken by the emotional brain. It is important for us to know, understand and to manage emotions.

When I attended an interview in a start-up, the CEO who was interviewing me made an important observation. He said I was using my left hand and right hand with so much ease while answering. That was the first time anybody had commented on my hand gestures. My hand movements were an indication of using my left and right brain as hands are direct extensions of the brain. I got to know about it much later. Indeed, I could relate to both technical people and creative art designers too. My engineering and my graphic designing skills were the deciding factors for the job. During the recession, the role was created especially for me and I got placed in the company. The company needed someone who could bridge the gap between the technical and creative design team.

I agreed to work for a slightly lesser CTC than what I was getting in my current company as the role excited me. The venue was much closer to my house. This opportunity was unlike the other offer of a higher CTC with a big company where I had to travel for almost 2 hours in the morning and 2.5 hours in the evening in a cab. Most of the friends and family said “It is a bad decision to join the start-up.” I always felt it was the right decision in spite of all the challenges.

Emotions are a neurological reaction to an external event. Emotions are psychological (what we think) and biological (what we feel). Our brain responds to our thoughts by releasing hormones and chemicals, which are sent to the body. Feeling is what happens in the body. Emotions are now being felt through a physical sensation with every nerve in the body. All emotions come about in this way, whether positive or negative.

Depending on the nature of emotion evoked, a positive or negative action takes place. This action has an impact on our personal and professional lives. They build our confidence.

Around every person, there is a field of emotional energy. A positive or negative field is created by positive or negative emotions. The higher the levels of energy, the greater are the accomplishments.

With negative field (hurt, anger, possessiveness, greed, jealousy, fear, we are less able to act with speed and efficiency). When I used to drive alone in unknown areas of Bangalore without a physical map or the luxury of GPS backing a few years ago or low battery in mobile with no soul in sight, I had to rely on my gut feeling especially at crossroads. Whichever road I felt was right, always turned out wrong. Inevitably, I always observed that when I had a male companion, the direction the guy pointed out would be always opposite to my gut feeling and it would turn out to be right. Was I thinking right or feeling right or acting right? I think reasoning has to be employed in such a kind of scenario and not gut feeling.
