Ceiling Fan Mistakes We All Make
While people have become more particular about the design aspect of a ceiling fan, they still make a lot of blunders when it comes to choosing the right ceiling fan in terms of its performance aspect. Some of us make various installation blunders that can even lead to safety hazards. Therefore to help, in this article, we talk about some of the most common ceiling fan mistakes that most of us make. Come along, let's take a look!
1. Selecting the Wrong Fan Size
Selecting the right ceiling fan size is essential not only in terms of performance (air delivery) but also in terms of how apt it looks when placed in a room. Ceiling fans are measured by the sweep size (or blade span). It is the diameter of the circle formed when the fan is set in motion. The sweep size depends on the size of your room. So before you buy a fan, measure the dimensions of your room and then opt for the right fan size (or sweep size). Here are some room sizes and the appropriate fan sizes for them.
a. Small spaces such as small bathrooms, utility rooms, walk-in closets, balconies that are less than 50 square feet require a 600-900 mm sweep size.
b. Slightly bigger spaces such as kitchens, full bathrooms, office/study rooms that are between 50 to 75 square feet require a 900-1050 mm sweep size.
c. Rooms that are 75 to 160 square feet in size, for example, bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, etc. require a 1200 mm sweep.
d. Larger rooms, halls, and studios with room sizes of 160 to 250 square feet require a 1400 mm sweep.
2. Neglecting the Down-Rod Size
When you purchase a ceiling fan, you need to select the right-down rod size. Neglecting the down rod size can directly affect the fan's performance. The down rod size influences the air delivery of the fan. This, in turn, affects its cooling capacity. The length of the down rod required for your room depends upon the height of the ceiling. To allow proper airflow, the minimum distance between the ceiling and the blade sweep should be 9-10 inches.
Choosing the right down rod size is also important for safety purposes. A ceiling fan should always hang around 7 to 7.5 feet above the floor. For higher ceilings, it should be approx. 8 to 8.5 feet.
3. Ignoring the Manual
A common mistake that people make is that they dive into the installation process without even reading the manual. And though assembling and installing a fan is no rocket science, we still recommend that you read the manual before starting the installation process. You can also watch a video on how to install ceiling fans if the fan you bought has an installation video available on the internet. For instance, Luminous India has a channel on YouTube where you can find various installation videos for the different ceiling fans that the company has to offer.
4. Installing the Fan All By Yourself
While you can assemble the fan all by yourself, it’s best to have someone by your side when you climb the ladder to install the ceiling fan. Imagine you're in the middle of the installation and you realize that you need a certain tool. Don’t you think it would be better if you have a helping buddy who can just hand you the tools and help you avoid the hassle of climbing up and down the ladder? And this is just one of the reasons you would need a helping buddy, the other more important reason is that you would need them to hold the ladder as a precautionary measure. Therefore, keep a helping buddy at hand for assistance.
5. Starting Without Proper Arrangements
As they say ‘proper planning prevents poor performance’. So before you get started with the installation process, make sure you have all your stuff arranged in order. Layout all the supplies (screwdrivers, flashlight, et al) in place. Also, make sure that you properly assemble all the parts of the ceiling fan before you hang it.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when buying a ceiling fan is that they purchase a fan only on the basis of its price. They compare all the fans and then buy the one that’s most cheaply priced. Make sure you don’t make that mistake.
Go for a ceiling fan from a reputable brand even if it costs a little extra. Also, if you want to buy a high performance ceiling fan that not just goes with your home decor but is also reasonably priced then you must check out the wide range of ceiling fans that Luminous India has to offer.
